Ghanaian Gospel musician Perez Muzik sparked candid discussions about the state of Ghana’s music industry during a recent X space organized as part of the 69th Independence Anniversary Celebration. The session, themed National Identity and Unity: Harnessing Culture & Global Partnerships, brought together cultural and creative voices including Prof. Kobby Mensah, CEO of GTDC, Khadijah Khalid, food and lifestyle content creator and social media influencer Kaly Jay, with media personality A.J Sarpong and pop culture journalist Olele Salvador hosting the conversation.
During the discussion, Perez Muzik expressed sharp criticism of the structures meant to support local musicians.
“We don’t really have a music industry. We just have a couple of people trying to put themselves out there,” he said, emphasizing the struggles faced by emerging artistes in Ghana.
He also questioned the efficacy of key music institutions,
“If MUSIGA was working, the church should pay anytime our music is used,” he stated, highlighting what he perceives as lapses in royalty collection and enforcement.
Perez further expressed distrust in GHAMRO, the national royalties collection body stating;
“I don’t trust GHAMRO to collect my royalties.”
On leadership in the music industry, the gospel musician questioned the suitability of current governance structures;
“I don’t think a musician should be heading MUSIGA.”
He stressed the need for professional management in the industry, adding;
“It’s about time we started employing the right people to help us.”

The X space provided a platform for creatives and industry stakeholders to reflect on the challenges and opportunities within Ghana’s cultural landscape, particularly around intellectual property, royalty management, and global partnerships.
Perez Muzik’s candid remarks reignite the ongoing conversation about strengthening Ghana’s music industry and ensuring fair compensation and support for its artistes.
