Mobile Money Agents Cautioned After GH₵10,000 Cash Swap Scam

Mobile money agents across Ghana have been urged to recount cash every time it leaves and returns to their hands after a vendor reportedly lost GH₵10,000 in a cash swap scam.

The caution was issued by the Mobile Money Advocacy Group Ghana (MoMAG), which shared the incident as a warning to vendors about the growing tactics used by fraudsters.

According to the group, the incident occurred when a customer interrupted an ongoing transaction, claiming they could not reach the intended recipient and asking the agent to stop the transfer. The vendor refunded the money to the customer.

MoMAG said the customer returned shortly afterwards with the cash wrapped in the same black rubber band. Believing it was the same bundle she had already counted, the agent accepted it without checking the contents again.

After the customer left, the agent discovered that the GH₵10,000 she had originally counted in GH₵200 notes had allegedly been replaced with GH₵1 notes.

Describing the incident as a painful lesson, the advocacy group said mobile money vendors should never rely on the appearance of a bundle of cash, even if it looks untouched or is returned immediately.

It advised agents to verify the contents of every bundle before completing or resuming any transaction, regardless of whether the customer is familiar, polite, or appears to be in a hurry.

MoMAG warned that fraudsters often exploit distraction, urgency, and assumptions to deceive vendors.

The group urged all mobile money agents to recount cash every time it leaves and returns to their hands, refuse to be rushed during transactions, remain focused, and avoid unnecessary distractions.

It also advised vendors to pause and verify any transaction whenever they notice anything unusual, stressing that patience, alertness, and strict adherence to transaction procedures remain the best defence against fraud.

MoMAG said a few extra seconds spent recounting money could prevent agents from losing months of hard-earned income and urged vendors to remain vigilant to protect both their businesses and livelihoods.
