Teacher Unions Suspend Planned Strike After Talks With Education Minister
Haruna Iddrisu

A coalition of teacher unions in Ghana has suspended a threatened industrial strike following discussions with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu on Monday.

The unions had warned of action over delays in placing newly promoted teachers on the corresponding salary scales. Despite promotions, many teachers had not received the associated financial benefits.

The hold-up stemmed from additional documentation requirements issued by the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department, which the unions said conflicted with earlier assurances from the Ghana Education Service of automatic implementation by August.

After meeting the minister, the unions decided to call off the planned strike and pursue further engagement with the government to resolve the salary placement issues.

The development averts potential disruption to schools as the academic year continues.
