Food Prices Mixed At Makola Despite Expected Drop In Inflation For July 2026

Prices of some food commodities remain high despite lower inflation rates recorded in recent months.

According to a report by Databank, inflation in July 2026 is expected to decrease compared to the 5.3 percent recorded in June.

The expected slowdown will occur before the August harvest season, which is forecast to boost food product availability and lessen pricing pressure in major markets.

3Music TV visited the Makola market at Accra Central to assess the reality of food and other commodity pricing on the ground in mid-July.

From interactions with traders and consumers, most items have seen significant reductions.

Commodities such as okra, garden eggs, and onions have dropped in price compared to the previous year when traders could hardly buy to resell.

One vendor told 3Music TV that the rainy season had favoured crops and the bumper harvest of okra and garden eggs had contributed to the reduction in prices.

"The rains that fell earlier have helped garden eggs grow well, and so their price has reduced. We now sell one bucket of garden eggs at Gh¢100, but if customers offer Gh¢90 or Gh¢80, we can give it to them. As for okra, we even sell it at Gh¢5," the vendor said.

Another woman who trades onions and tomatoes attributed the skyrocketing price of tomatoes to the heavy downpours recorded this year.

"The rains were too heavy for some crops this time around, and that is why tomatoes are expensive. Onions are not expensive. Ginger, tomatoes, and pepper prices have really shot up. But we're hoping that the harvest and Homowo season will bring us good luck," she said.

Many consumers also reiterated that tomato prices have gone high while other commodities have significantly reduced.

Some shared that they are able to buy many things now, unlike previous times.

Both traders and consumers are experiencing the easing of inflation rates in the market.

Economists are watching closely to see whether the latest signals will remain the same or change before July ends.
