Thunder One Win Away from NBA Finals After Game 4 Thriller
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder are on the brink of their first NBA Finals appearance since 2012, needing just one more victory to eliminate the Minnesota Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals. With a 3-1 series lead, the Thunder can clinch their spot in the NBA Finals with a win at home in Game 5 on Wednesday night.
In a high-octane Game 4, the Thunder edged out the Timberwolves 128-126, showcasing their resilience against a relentless Minnesota squad. Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the newly crowned league MVP, delivered a masterful performance, posting 40 points, 10 assists, and nine rebounds. Jalen Williams, Oklahoma City’s other All-Star, contributed 34 points, including six three-pointers, while Chet Holmgren added 21 points and seven rebounds, creating matchup nightmares for his hometown Timberwolves.
Despite Minnesota’s 18 made three-pointers and 64 bench points, the Thunder held firm, answering every Timberwolves run with clutch plays down the stretch. “That was a championship-like win,” said local reporter T.J. Eckert on X, highlighting standout performances from Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams, Holmgren, and rookie Cason Wallace. The Thunder’s ability to withstand Minnesota’s late-game surges has put them in prime position to close out the series at home.
Gilgeous-Alexander, averaging 30.8 points and 8.3 assists in the series, has been the driving force for Oklahoma City. His 40-point, near-triple-double in Game 4 underscored why he’s considered one of the league’s elite. Williams, with 23 points per game in the series, has emerged as a reliable second option, while Holmgren’s defensive presence and versatility have disrupted Minnesota’s game plan.
The Timberwolves, led by Anthony Edwards, fought valiantly in Game 4 but couldn’t overcome Oklahoma City’s balanced attack. Posts on X reflect the sentiment that the Thunder’s depth and composure have been too much for Minnesota, with one user noting, “Hard to envision this series being extended at this rate.”
As the Thunder return to Oklahoma City for Game 5, the atmosphere is electric. A win on Wednesday would propel the young Thunder, who were counted out by many at the season’s start, into the NBA Finals. Tip-off is set for 8:00 PM CT at Paycom Center.
