Universal Music Group Seeks Dismissal of Drake’s Petition in Texas Court

Universal Music Group (UMG) has filed a motion in a Texas court to dismiss Drake’s petition against the music giant, arguing that the rapper’s claims lack sufficient evidence.

According to a report by HipHopDX, UMG submitted a 144-page motion in Bexar County, where they refuted Drake’s allegations of payola and improper payments to radio stations to promote the track Not Like Us. UMG maintained that their promotional efforts are protected under the First Amendment and dismissed Drake’s claims as “hearsay” and “inadmissible as evidence.”

The motion also highlighted procedural issues, stating that Drake filed the petition in the wrong court, which they argue is a violation of Texas state law. UMG is pushing for the case to be dismissed and has requested that Drake be held responsible for covering their legal fees.

The dispute centers on Drake’s claims of alleged misconduct by UMG and its affiliates. If the case proceeds, Drake’s team seeks to depose UMG and iHeartMedia employees to gather evidence for a potential lawsuit.

As of now, Drake’s representatives have not responded to UMG’s motion. The court has scheduled a hearing for January 28th, where it will be determined whether Drake can move forward with his efforts to depose UMG and iHeartMedia personnel.

The music industry is watching closely as this legal battle unfolds, given its potential implications for artiste-label relationships and promotional practices.
