U.S. and China Agree to 90-Day Tariff Reduction, Easing Trade Tensions

U.S. and China Agree to 90-Day Tariff Reduction, Easing Trade Tensions
US AND CHINA
The United States and China have reached a significant agreement to temporarily reduce tariffs for 90 days in an effort to ease escalating trade tensions. As announced by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Geneva, the U.S. will reduce tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to 30%, while China will lower its tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%.

The agreement follows intensive trade talks characterized by mutual respect and constructive dialogue. A joint statement from the White House emphasized the intention to establish a mechanism for ongoing discussions on economic and trade relations post the 90-day pause.

Global financial markets responded positively to the announcement. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose over 2%, while tech stocks rallied, reflecting investor optimism.  Sectors such as apparel, footwear, and travel saw notable gains, with companies like Nike, Under Armour, and Delta Airlines experiencing stock increases.

While the tariff reductions provide temporary relief, analysts caution that the 90-day window is a pause rather than a resolution. Enduring risks and uncertainties remain, and the next three months will be critical in determining whether a lasting trade resolution can be achieved.

The agreement also opens the door to future discussions on strategic industries and cooperation on controlling fentanyl precursor trafficking. Both nations have expressed a desire to avoid economic decoupling and pursue more balanced trade.

This development marks a positive shift in U.S.-China relations, which had previously caused substantial volatility in global markets since President Trump’s tariff hike on April 2nd.
