Norwegian Afrobeat singer and songwriter, Akuvi, has opened up about her unconventional musical journey, cultural influences and the power of persistence, following her appearance on Culture Daily.
Born into a musically inclined family and raised across multiple continents, Akuvi’s sound reflects a rich blend of African roots and global experiences. Having grown up in Norway, spent formative years in South Africa and now firmly reconnecting with Ghana, the singer describes her journey as one of self-discovery, courage and alignment.
“I’ve lived in different places, but Ghana feels like home,” she said. “There’s an energy here, a sense of community that I didn’t experience in the same way elsewhere.”
One of the standout moments of the interview was Akuvi’s reflection on her song DREAM BIG, a record written four years ago that has now become a defining milestone in her career. The song, inspired by conversations about returning to her roots and pursuing music seriously in Ghana, has since evolved into a powerful manifestation featuring none other than Stonebwoy.
At the time of writing the song, the collaboration seemed far-fetched.
“People thought it was cute that I wanted Stonebwoy on the song. He didn’t even know who I was then,” she recalled.
Despite the odds, Akuvi held on to the record, refusing to release it without the feature she envisioned. After more than two years of persistence mentioning Stonebwoy in interviews, reaching out through mutual contacts and trusting timing. The opportunity finally came through a chance airport encounter involving her brother and manager.
That moment led to a studio session abroad, where Stonebwoy heard the story behind the song and immediately agreed to be part of it.
“He really supports quality, whether it comes from an upcoming artiste or an established one,” Akuvi noted. “That meant everything to me.”
Akuvi’s music, while rooted in Afrobeat, leans toward the emotional and alternative side of the genre. She describes her style as “Afrobeat for emotional gangsters,” music that blends vulnerability with rhythm.
Now, with the success of DREAM BIG and a widely praised performance at the 2025 BHIM Fest, Akuvi says she is entering a new chapter. Fan engagement has surged, with listeners revisiting her catalogue and calling for visuals and live performances.
