Former British Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, has expressed dissenting views that the British Empire should pay reparations to former colonies, arguing that Ghana and other former colonies should instead pay the United Kingdom for their efforts in developing these countries.
Braverman's comments come after recent demands for reparative justice regarding the transatlantic slave trade and the long-lasting consequences of colonialism on African societies and enslaved people's descendants from Ghana and other African nations.
The defected Conservative Politician shared a post on X stating that the British Empire significantly contributed to the today's world.
"The British Empire did so much good for the world," Braverman wrote.
While taking a firm stand against slavery, she pointed out that demanding modern-day Britain to pay for the wrongs of the past is unlawful.
"Of course, slavery was abhorrent, but to expect the British people of the 21st century to pay for actions that took place in the 18th century has no basis in law," she wrote.
Braverman further stated that former British colonies would need to reimburse Britain if reparations talks were to take place.
"If the government is seriously thinking about this, then former colonies should pay Britain back for the considerable investment, effort, and contribution that this country made, which laid the foundations for many flourishing democracies today," she added.
