President Declares Two Days of National General Cleaning Exercise
President John Dramani Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has declared Friday, July 10, 2026, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, as National General Cleaning Days in seven regions affected by the recent floods, as part of efforts to restore communities, prevent future disasters and promote environmental sanitation.

The announcement, made by the Presidency under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, calls on citizens across the affected regions to actively participate in the nationwide exercise under the theme, Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana After the Floods.

According to the statement, the initiative is aimed at mobilising communities to clean public spaces, protect the environment, and safeguard lives by tackling the causes of recurring floods.

President Mahama has directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), and heads of public institutions, to leave their offices and join residents in leading cleanup activities within their communities.

The two-day exercise has been structured to ensure effective coordination. On Friday, July 10, personnel from the security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and waste management companies will begin the cleanup operation. The exercise will then be expanded on Saturday, July 11, with members of the general public joining the security services and assemblies.

The Presidency described the exercise as a critical national intervention, noting that years of indiscriminate littering and plastic waste have contributed significantly to blocked drainage systems and devastating floods that continue to destroy property and claim lives.

To support the initiative, all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies have been directed to collaborate with waste management companies to provide adequate logistics, including waste trucks, gloves, shovels, and other cleaning equipment. Assemblies have also been instructed to ensure that collected refuse and silt are immediately evacuated to prevent them from being washed back into drains.

The government is urging all Ghanaians to embrace the exercise as a demonstration of unity, discipline and collective responsibility.

“Let us rise together and show that the Ghanaian spirit of community, discipline, and unity is alive and well. Protect your home, protect your neighbour, and let us clean our beloved homeland,” the statement concluded.
