On May 5, 2025, André 3000, the enigmatic Atlanta legend and former OutKast visionary, stunned fans with the surprise release of 7 PIANO SKETCHES, a 16-minute instrumental EP that marks his first project since the acclaimed flute-centric NEW BLUE SUN in November 2023. True to its name, the seven-track collection features raw, improvisational solo piano pieces, recorded nearly a decade ago in a minimalist Texas home with just a piano, beds, and TV screens.
André, known for redefining hip-hop, continues his experimental journey, playfully warning fans via Instagram, “No bars,” as the EP embraces a lyric-free, meditative soundscape. The release, dropped at 8 PM EST via Epic Records, coincided with his show-stopping 2025 Met Gala appearance, where he wore a bespoke Burberry piano on his back, styled by Law Roach and echoing the EP’s cover art. This strategic timing underscores André’s knack for blending music, fashion, and cultural moments into a singular artistic statement.
The origins of 7 PIANO SKETCHES reveal a deeply personal creative process, with André describing it as “The Best Worst Rap Album in History” in the original liner notes, a nod to its lack of lyrics and its emotional freedom. Recorded partly before New Blue Sun, which earned three Grammy nominations including Album of the Year, the EP captures André’s unorthodox approach. I spread my fingers out on the keys and randomly but with purpose move them around until I find something that feels good, he said.
Tracks like “when you’re a ant and you wake up in an awesome mood, about to drive your son to school, only to discover that you left the lights on in the car last night so your battery is drained” showcase his whimsical yet introspective style, blending humor with raw vulnerability. Fans on X expressed mixed sentiments, some longing for rap verses while others praised his fearless evolution, with one post calling it “a late-night letter scribbled in melody.
André’s 7 PIANO SKETCHES arrives amid a transformative year, with the artiste set to receive an Honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music on May 10, 2025, and an OutKast induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame alongside Big Boi in November. Following New Blue Sun’s critical success and its 2024 documentary MOVING DAY, which featured an unreleased track, André continues to defy expectations, prioritizing creative freedom over commercial demands.
His Met Gala stunt, a collaboration with Burberry’s Daniel Lee and his revived Benji Bixby fashion line, amplified the EP’s rollout, cementing his status as a cultural innovator. As he told GQ, his approach to art reflects a personal “exclamation point” rather than a checklist, a philosophy evident in this minimalist yet profound project. 7 PIANO SKETCHES not only expands André 3000’s sonic legacy but also inspires a new generation to embrace authenticity over convention, proving that true artistry knows no bounds
