A group of musicians from Accra’s Asylum Down community has launched a new music collective aimed at reviving the area’s long-standing contribution to Ghana’s entertainment industry while creating opportunities for emerging local talent.
The collective, known as Asylum Down Boys, brings together artistes Kwesi Tum Tum, Killah Vel and Musty.
The group recently released a six-track EP and says it plans to expand the project to include more musicians from the neighbourhood.
Speaking on The Culture Daily on 3Music TV, and Pluzz FM, the artistes said the initiative grew naturally from years of collaboration and a shared desire to represent their community through music.
“Asylum Down Boys is a collective. We are individual talents,” Kwesi Tum Tum explained, adding that the project was not originally planned but emerged after the group began recording extensively together.
The musicians said they have already recorded dozens of songs this year and intend to release a second volume of the EP featuring additional artistes from the area.
According to the group, the broader goal is to create a platform for musicians from Asylum Down and highlight the community’s place in Ghana’s music history.
The neighbourhood has long been associated with the country’s entertainment industry.
During the discussion, the artistes and programme hosts reflected on the area’s links to influential media institutions, recording studios and music personalities that helped shape contemporary Ghanaian music.
They cited the historic Kay Frequency’s studio, which worked with several notable artistes and producers, as well as Vibe FM, one of the country’s influential radio stations in the early 2000s.
The group also mentioned local artistes including Fireflex, Escobar and Two Seas and others as part of the growing music community in the area.
As part of efforts to strengthen the movement, the collective is exploring plans to organise a community music event in Asylum Down, which members say has not hosted a major street music programme in many years.
The artistes believe such initiatives could help showcase emerging talent and reconnect younger musicians with the area’s entertainment legacy.
The six-track Asylum Down Boys EP is currently available on major streaming platforms.
