Fancy Gadam Attributes Successful Breakthrough Into Mainstream Music Scene To Support From Friends

Fancy Gadam has credited his friends, team members and industry supporters for helping him build a music career that has lasted more than a decade.

The musician said he started his career with friends who later became his management team and remained with him as his career developed.

Fancy Gadam who was speaking in the Culture Daily morning show 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9 FM, said the team supported him financially when he had little money.

He recalled that members of his team contributed GH¢100 each towards his second album and the proceeds from their first show were later returned to him to invest in his career.

“When we had no money and they were my friends. Friends become team, he said.

Fancy Gadam said the system allowed the money generated from his shows to be continuously reinvested into his music career.

He later met a manager and investor, identified as Alhaji Nero, in 2016. According to Fancy Gadam, Nero managed him for three years and helped him build connections within the industry.

Through that relationship, he eventually connected with rapper Sarkodie.

Fancy Gadam said Sarkodie played an important role in helping his music reach audiences outside northern Ghana.

He recalled that after their collaboration, Sarkodie actively performed the song at different events, helping to increase its reach.

“It was not just collaboration. Sarkodie supported me. He was performing the song everywhere he goes,Fancy Gadam said.

The musician said the support was particularly important at a time when audiences in Accra were still unfamiliar with his music.

He recalled winning the New Artist of the Year award after performing in Accra, despite facing questions about his recognition among audiences in the capital.

Fancy Gadam said his relationship with supporters in northern Ghana has also helped him establish a strong live-performance culture.

He said his shows have grown from venues with capacities of about 1,000 people to larger spaces, including the Tamale Sports Stadium.

He also described himself as the first artiste to sell out the National Theatre’s Boxing Arena to people from the north, saying the size and strength of the community had helped create opportunities for artistes from the region.

Fancy Gadam said he does not feel pressured by the emergence of new artistes because new talent is part of the music industry.

“There’s no pressure at all,” he said.

He mentioned emerging artistes such as Naga Move and Young Pop as examples of musicians from northern Ghana who are making progress.

Fancy Gadam also said established artistes have a responsibility to support emerging talent by giving them opportunities to perform at events and collaborating with them.

His comments come amid a broader conversation about the development of Ghana’s northern music industry and the challenges faced by artistes seeking national recognition from outside Accra.
