I Was Told My Music Wasn’t The Artiste Of The Year Type - KiDi

Ghanaian singer KiDi has opened up about being told early in his career that his style of music was not suited for major awards recognition.

In a new interview with media personality Kafui Dey, the Afrobeats and highlife artiste said industry figures once advised him that his sound was not the “Artiste of the Year” type. He recalled being told his music would be packaged differently while others were seen as better suited for top honours.

The comment came as KiDi reflected on his journey, including his transition to independence after leaving Lynx Entertainment and his upcoming album Where Do We Go From Here.

KiDi has since proved the sceptics wrong. He won Artiste of the Year at the 2022 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, along with other major prizes for his album The Golden Boy and hit single “Touch It.” He has also claimed the top award at the 3Music Awards.

The remarks surface months after KiDi was left out of the Artiste of the Year category at the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards. At the time, he said he was not bothered by the omission and would return stronger.
