Residents and business operators around Avenor in Accra's North Industrial Area are grappling with a double tragedy after a building collapse that claimed lives and left others injured also plunged thousands of customers into darkness.
The three-story structure, located opposite the Ashfoam showroom and adjacent to Melcom Plus at Avenor, collapsed on Saturday, June 6, 2026, triggering a major rescue operation involving personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service and other emergency responders.

As rescuers searched through the rubble for survivors, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) disconnected power supply to parts of the area after electricity infrastructure was affected by the collapse.
The interruption left thousands of households and businesses without electricity, compounding the challenges facing residents already shaken by the disaster.
For traders and shop owners around Avenor and the North Industrial Area, the outage added another layer of uncertainty to an already difficult day.
The collapse occurred in one of Accra's busiest commercial corridors, where warehouses, retail shops, offices and small businesses depend heavily on a stable electricity supply for their daily operations.
Emergency responders have been working throughout the day to rescue victims trapped beneath the debris. Reports indicated that two people have lost their lives with another said to be in critical condition.
Authorities said the collapsed structure was reportedly being used as a residential facility and a mosque.
Preliminary information also suggested that parts of the building were still under construction before the incident occurred.
Meanwhile, ECG engineers are assessing the extent of damage to power infrastructure in the area as residents are waiting for electricity to be restored.
The outage affected thousands of customers beyond the immediate collapse site, highlighting the wider impact of the disaster on surrounding communities and businesses.
