Black Sherif became the only Ghanaian artiste to win an award at the just concluded SoundCity MVP Awards held in Lagos, Nigeria. Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong, with stage name Black Sherif won the Best Hip-hop Artiste at the 2023 edition of the Soundcity Awards.
The Awards was organized by Soundcity Africa with Tingo Mobiles as headline sponsor.
Blacko was the only Ghanaian in the Best Hip-hop category among counterparts from Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa. The 21-year-old won the Best Hip-hop category with the song Kwaku the Traveller.
Ghanaian musicians who received nominations for the Sound City Awards Festival include KiDi, Gyakie, DopeNation, Camidoh, King Promise and Darkovibes.
However, none of these acts received an award in their categories.
With 15 categories, Nigerian artiste Asake, Fireboy DML, Ruger among others won 12 different awards in their respective categories.
Burna Boy was crowned as the African Artiste of the Year with Tems winning the Female MVP of the Year followed by Asake as the Male MVP of the Year.
The event which was powered by Tingo Mobiles had appearance from cast of Shanty Town including Ini Edo, Mercy Eke and Chidi Mokeme.
The Best Digital Artiste went to Rema whiles Oxlade's Ku Lo Sa won the Listeners Choice of the Year. The Best Collaboration also went to Pheelz and Bnxn Fka Buju with Finnese.
Nigerian's Fireboy DML also went home with the Best Pop Song of the Year with the remix of Peru which featured Ed Sheeran. Soundcity Song Of The Year also went to Kizz Daniel and Tekno with the song Buga.
Bandana, a song by Fireboy DML and Asake, also won Video of the Year.
