Culture Squad Sparks Debate On Detty December Vs December In Ghana
Culture Squad

The Culture Squad has ignited a fresh national conversation around how Ghana’s December experience should be branded, questioning whether the globally popular “Detty December” remains the best identity or if “December in Ghana” offers a more sustainable alternative.

During the discussion, the Squad acknowledged that Detty December has grown into a powerful cultural phrase, closely associated with joy, freedom, nightlife, concerts and Ghana’s welcoming atmosphere. Some Culture Squad members noted that the term has become emotionally embedded in the diaspora experience, with many visitors intentionally travelling to Ghana specifically for what they describe as “Detty December.”

However, concerns were raised about brand dilution, as other African countries increasingly adopt the phrase. Some Culture Squad members also argued that December in Ghana provides clearer geographical ownership and better positions the country within the global tourism market.

While opinions differed, the panel agreed on one key point: December in Ghana has evolved into more than a seasonal celebration. It is now a cultural product that requires intentional branding and protection.
