For Akwaboah, music has never been just a career choice. It is heritage, instinct and destiny woven through generations.
Born into a lineage of musicians, the singer-songwriter describes himself as “an Akwaboah,” a continuation of a family tradition that began with his grandfather and was carried forward by his father. Today, that legacy lives on through him, not as an obligation but as fulfilment.
This sense of continuity and lived experience finds fresh expression in his latest single, AKONO BA, set for release Saturday, 17th January.
Translated loosely as a craving or deep desire for someone you like, AKONO BA reflects something deeply human, those everyday moments that define relationships. For Akwaboah, the inspiration came straight from home.
Speaking to 3Music TV in an exclusive conversation, He breaks down the creative process of AKONO BA. The song playfully captures a familiar scenario for many couples: the long wait while a woman gets ready, the impatience that follows and the eventual admiration when she finally steps out looking radiant.

“One time my wife and I were going somewhere and I waited almost 45 minutes. I was mad,” he recalls with laughter. “But when she finally came out, she was so beautiful. That’s where the song came from.”
While lighthearted, AKONO BA speaks to the realities of married life, making it relatable not just for couples, but for anyone who has experienced love up close.
“This song represents a chapter of me being a married man,” he explains. “And the truth is, these things happen in every home.”
Musically, AKONO BA marks a subtle but intentional evolution. Known for recording much of his work live with a full band, Akwaboah takes a different approach this time, blending traditional Highlife foundations with Amapiano-driven arrangements and modern rhythmic textures.

“It’s highlife fused with my Amapiano,” he says. “I’m trying to see how different generations can meet within the sound.”
The result is a record that stays rooted in Ghanaian musical identity while gently pushing its sonic boundaries. An approach he believes is essential.
Despite evolving sounds and changing industry trends, Akwaboah remains intentional about longevity. He credits his time playing with live bands in Kumasi for shaping his understanding of music, genre and audience.
AKONO BA also serves a larger purpose. The release feeds into preparations for his upcoming Shades of Love concert, with visuals, performances and fan engagement planned to keep the song alive long after its debut.
