President John Dramani Mahama, has outlined an ambitious reform agenda aimed at delivering what he described as a “total transformation” of Ghana’s cocoa sector, the backbone of the country’s agricultural economy.
Speaking during his address, the President sought to reassure cocoa farmers that government interventions are designed to secure both fair returns for producers and long-term financial sustainability for the nation.
He acknowledged the concerns surrounding the recent reduction in cocoa producer prices, characterising the decision as difficult but necessary to prevent excessive borrowing that could further strain public finances.
According to President Mahama, the adjustment forms part of broader structural reforms intended to stabilise the sector and restore confidence. He pledged to introduce transparent and equitable pricing mechanisms that will enable farmers to meet rising production costs while earning reasonable profit margins.
The President further emphasised that strengthening institutional efficiency, improving financial management and enhancing value-chain support will be central to building resilience within the cocoa industry. He expressed confidence that the ongoing reforms will lay a solid foundation for sustained growth, increased productivity and improved livelihoods for cocoa-growing communities nationwide.
