Founder of volunteer sanitation group BuzstopBoys, Heneba Kwadwo Safo, has expressed admiration for the level of public participation in this year’s National Clean-up Day, describing the response as a sign that Ghanaians are beginning to embrace collective responsibility for keeping the country clean.

Speaking to 3Music TV during the nationwide exercise, Heneba said he observed many residents taking part in clean-up activities as he travelled through parts of Accra.

“So far I would say it’s very impressive because I’ve seen almost everybody on the stretch that I drove through this morning getting themselves involved,” he said.

He said no government could solve the country’s sanitation challenges without the active support of citizens, urging Ghanaians to work together to improve their communities.

The BuzstopBoys founder said the nationwide exercise reflects a message his organisation has championed for the past three years, that everyone contributes to waste generation and should therefore take part in keeping the environment clean.

According to him, environmental protection should begin with education and a change in public attitudes rather than relying on a few individuals to clean up after everyone else.

Although he said the renewed focus on sanitation had taken time, he welcomed the government’s efforts to encourage wider public participation.

“It’s better late than never,” he said, adding that Ghana should not still be grappling with flooding as it prepares to mark its 70th anniversary next year.

Heneba argued that environmental education should be strengthened in schools to help build a generation that values and protects natural resources.

He also called for the creation of volunteer sanitation groups in communities across the country, saying young people could play a leading role in maintaining clean surroundings, clearing choked drains and reporting environmental hazards.

He said social media should also be used to promote behavioural change and public awareness on sanitation, expressing confidence that sustained education would produce long-term improvements.

The National Clean-up Day formed part of a nationwide exercise aimed at improving sanitation and encouraging citizens to take greater responsibility for environmental cleanliness amid continuing concerns over flooding and waste management in Ghana.
