Bagbin Advocates Traditional And Religious Inclusion In Governance

Bagbin Advocates Traditional And Religious Inclusion In Governance
Alban Bagbin

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has proposed the need for constitutional amendment to integrate traditional and religious leaders into the Parliamentary framework.

According to him, the inclusion will not only promote a more cohesive national identity but also reduce the growing divisiveness that has defined the legislative body.

The speaker made this argument while delivering a speech at the National Development Conference hosted by Church of Pentecost, attended by a large audience that included prominent figures in national development, religious leaders, government officials, and traditional authorities.

"This reform would make Parliament a more nationalistic institution and help reduce the growing partisan nature of the House by promoting broader national representation," he opined.

During his speech, the speaker also urged religious and traditional authorities to take on the responsibility of supporting and fostering people with good moral standards.

He emphasised how important these leaders are to strengthening moral leadership and advancing national development.

Every year, the National Development Conference provides a forum for discussing important matters pertaining to the nation's development and governance initiatives.

It draws a varied audience dedicated to improving Ghana's socioeconomic situation.

Adding his voice to the call, the Paramount Chief of Breman Asikuma and President of the National House of Chiefs, Odeefuo Amoakwa Buadu VIII, supported the call for reform by highlighting the importance of giving the Chieftaincy Ministry more authority and recognition.

“Our traditional systems must be upheld and enhanced, as they are crucial for the harmonious governance of our people,” he said.

The call for reform by both government officials and local authorities highlights strong advocacy for the inclusion of traditional leaders in governance.
