President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as Ghana’s High Commissioner-Designate to Nigeria, reaffirming the strategic importance Ghana places on its relationship with Africa’s most populous nation.
The appointment was formally announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 1, 2026. Once confirmed through the necessary diplomatic protocols, Abu will represent Ghana’s interests in Nigeria, a key economic, political, and cultural partner within the West African sub-region.
The designation highlights the importance Ghana places on its bilateral relationship with Nigeria, particularly in areas of trade, diplomacy, and regional cooperation. As High Commissioner-Designate, Abu is expected to play a key role in deepening ties between the two countries while promoting mutual interests across commerce, culture, and governance.

Widely known for his contributions to Ghana’s creative and cultural space, Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu brings a unique background to the diplomatic role. His experience in the arts and creative industries is seen as an added advantage, especially as cultural diplomacy continues to play an increasing role in international relations.
The appointment comes shortly after President Mahama ordered the recall of the previous High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, popularly known as Baba Jamal. He was recalled on February 7, 2026, following allegations of voter inducement after participating in the parliamentary primaries of the National Democratic Congress in the Ayawaso East Constituency, which he won.
Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu’s appointment is subject to formal acceptance by the Nigerian government and the completion of required diplomatic protocols. Once confirmed, he will officially assume duty as Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, with expectations high for a renewed and dynamic phase in Ghana–Nigeria relations.
