The United States government has announced a temporary suspension of immigrant visa processing for nationals of 75 countries, including Ghana, in a move that signals a major shift in U.S. immigration policy.
The decision, confirmed by the U.S. State Department, is set to take effect on January 21, 2026 and will remain in place indefinitely while U.S. authorities conduct a comprehensive review of visa screening and eligibility procedures.
The suspension specifically affects immigrant visas, which are issued to individuals seeking permanent residence in the United States. These include family-based visas, employment-based visas and diversity visa (Green Card) applications. During this period, U.S. embassies and consulates will not schedule or process new immigrant visa interviews for affected countries.
However, non-immigrant visas such as tourist (B1/B2), student (F1) and exchange (J1) visas are not officially included in the suspension, though applicants may experience delays depending on local embassy operations.
According to U.S. officials, the pause is aimed at strengthening vetting and screening mechanisms, particularly around enforcement of existing immigration laws related to applicants who may become a “public charge,” meaning individuals considered likely to rely on U.S. government assistance.
Authorities say the review will also address concerns around fraud prevention, data verification and compliance with immigration requirements, as part of broader efforts to tighten legal immigration controls.
Ghana’s inclusion places it among 27 African countries impacted by the suspension, alongside Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and others across Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean.
For Ghanaian applicants, the decision means that ongoing immigrant visa applications may be delayed, while new applications will not move forward until further notice. Individuals with scheduled interviews could also face cancellations or postponements.
The move comes amid heightened debate over immigration policy in the United States and follows earlier visa-related tensions between the U.S. and Ghana in recent years. While previous restrictions focused on non-immigrant visa validity, this latest measure represents a broader and more impactful action, targeting pathways to permanent residency.
U.S. officials have not provided a timeline for when the suspension may be lifted, stating that processing will resume only after the policy review is completed and new guidelines are issued.
Prospective immigrant visa applicants from Ghana and other affected countries are being advised to monitor official U.S. embassy communications and avoid making irreversible travel or relocation plans until clarity is provided.
While the U.S. government maintains that the suspension is temporary and administrative in nature, its immediate impact is significant particularly for families, workers and lottery winners awaiting permanent migration opportunities. As diplomatic engagements and policy reviews continue, affected countries, including Ghana, will be watching closely for the next steps.
