Morocco has advanced to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 after edging past Nigeria 4–2 on penalties, following a tense 0–0 draw after extra time in their semi-final encounter.
The match, played at a high tempo and marked by tactical discipline, produced few clear-cut chances across 120 minutes. Morocco enjoyed longer spells of possession and territorial control. At the same time, Nigeria remained compact and dangerous on the counter, resulting in a stalemate that neither side could break during regulation or extra time.
With the deadlock unresolved, the contest was decided from the penalty spot. Morocco showed greater composure in the shootout, converting four of their attempts. Yassine Bounou proved decisive, producing crucial saves to deny Nigeria and tilt the balance in favour of the Atlas Lions. The winning penalty was calmly dispatched by Youssef En‑Nesyri, sealing a memorable night for the hosts.

The victory marks Morocco’s return to the AFCON final for the first time since 2004 and keeps alive their quest for a first continental title since 1976. It also underlines their defensive solidity and mental strength, qualities that have defined their tournament run.
Nigeria, meanwhile, bow out after a resilient performance, having matched their opponents throughout open play but ultimately falling short in the shootout. The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to the third-place playoff.
Morocco will face 2021 champions Senegal, who prevailed 1-0 over Egypt in Tanger, in the AFCON 2025 final, setting up a compelling showdown between two of the continent’s most consistent sides.
