China-based musicians Harikiri and Kadima say they are using music to connect cultures and introduce audiences to the growing Afro-influenced music scene in China.
The duo, who have known each other for less than a year, have already released songs together, including Brightest Star and their latest single, BAM.
Harikiri, a UK-born Jamaican producer and DJ who has lived in China for 12 years, described the country’s music industry as one of the world’s “big unknowns”.
He said many people outside China are unaware of its thriving hip-hop culture, particularly in the city of Chengdu, which he described as the country’s hip-hop capital.
“Chengdu is the home of hip hop for China,” he said, comparing the city to Atlanta’s influence on American rap music.
Harikiri first moved to China as a touring DJ and initially intended to improve his Chinese language skills after studying the language at university.
However, he said music opportunities soon took over and eventually turned his favourite hobby into a career.
The producer said he believes African music still has significant room for growth in China despite the emergence of Afro-inspired clubs and audiences.
According to him, he and Kadima decided to focus on building recognition in Ghana first before pushing their music further in China.
“We need home to know you and support you and then the world will follow,” he said.
The duo’s first released collaboration, Brightest Star, carries a message of self-confidence and appreciation for women.
Kadima said he wrote the song in 2023 to encourage women to embrace who they are.
“The hook itself says, ‘Love it the way you are, baby don’t change your style,’” he explained.
Beyond music, the pair say their friendship is built on a spiritual connection and a shared desire to create music that can travel across cultures.
With more releases planned this year, including a new song titled Worldwide, Harikiri and Kadima say they remain focused on taking their music to a global audience while strengthening ties between Ghana, Africa and China through their art.
