Afel Shares His Music Journey on 3Music TV
Afel

Fast-rising music talent Afel recently stopped by 3Music TV’s Culture Daily show to open up about his evolution as an artiste, sharing how he transitioned from recording covers to finding his signature tune.

Before his original releases, Afel revealed he was focused on R&B and hip-hop, and doing rap.

His former manager, however, shared a music video by Nigerian star Fireboy DML—specifically the visual for "What If I Say that ultimately propelled him to go into Afrobeats.

"It was fire," Afel recalled during the interview. "I mean, I was like, 'I have to do this.'"

The moment served as a major catalyst, inspiring him to expand his stylistic horizons beyond traditional hip-hop.

Afel also revealed that 2020 marked a definitive turning point in his career. He recognized that to truly build a lasting legacy, he needed to start putting out his own music.

"Sometime [in] 2020... I was like, 'Afel, you have to stop dropping covers. You have to drop your own songs,'" he explained.

"I wanted to drop my own songs, but I wanted the right time. I think that was the right time."

Talking about his latest song Akwadu during the conversation, Afel gave fans a peek behind the curtain regarding the backstory of the track.

The song apparently stems from a memorable personal encounter he once had.

"Akwadu is from like a wild experience I had," Afel revealed.

"I remember I told this lady that, for some time, she has been the best person I've had this experience with... It's about a fine girl who knows how to please her man—it's sensual."

With a clear vision, strong influences, and the courage to step out with original material, Afel continues to carve out his space in the music industry.
