Government Plans Second National Theatre In Kumasi

The government is planning to establish a second National Theatre in Kumasi as part of efforts to expand Ghana’s cultural and creative arts infrastructure, Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie has announced.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, 10 August 2026, Gomashie said the proposed facility would complement the existing National Theatre in Accra.

“We plan to build a second National Theatre in Kumasi,” she stated.

However, the minister made it clear that the immediate priority is not to begin construction of an entirely new theatre.

Instead, the government will focus on completing an existing theatre and Centre for National Culture project in the Ashanti Region that had already been started.

The sector minister said she recently toured theatre facilities and Centres for National Culture in the Ashanti Region and subsequently proposed to Cabinet that resources be directed towards finishing the stalled project rather than launching a fresh one. A suggestion approved by Cabinet. 

“I took a tour of the Ashanti Region’s theatre and Centre for National Culture spaces. I have suggested to Cabinet that instead of starting a new one, we focus on finishing what has been started,” she explained.

“And Cabinet is in approval of that suggestion. So that is what is going to happen, and if the opportunity comes, we start a new one.”

The decision aims to ensure efficient use of public resources by completing infrastructure already under way before committing funds to new construction. The move forms part of broader efforts to decentralise arts and culture facilities beyond Accra and strengthen the creative sector in the Ashanti Region.
