GPRTU Orders Drivers To Reverse Unapproved Transport Fare Hikes

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has directed commercial drivers who have increased transport fares without official approval to immediately revert to the previous charges.

The directive comes after complaints from passengers that some drivers had begun charging higher fares despite no approved increase being in place.

Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, Samuel Amoah, told Citi News that the proposed fare adjustment remains suspended until the end of August.

He explained that the decision followed the union’s latest meeting with the Ministry of Transport. The parties agreed to suspend the fare review after the government decided to absorb GH¢2 of the diesel price.

“We have been receiving some complaints that some drivers are increasing transport fares. I want to state it clearly that transport fares have not increased. The processes we go through before increasing transport fares is clearly there,” Amoah said.

He warned drivers who had already raised their fares to reverse the charges without delay. Passengers who encounter unapproved increases were advised to report union-member drivers to union officers and floating (non-union) drivers to any nearby police officer for intervention.

The move follows earlier discussions in which transport operators had considered a significant fare increase amid rising fuel and operating costs. The government’s recent diesel price intervention led the GPRTU and other operators to put those plans on hold while monitoring fuel prices.
