France has confirmed its first case of Ebola linked to the current outbreak in Central Africa after a doctor returning from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) tested positive for the virus.

French health authorities said on Wednesday that the patient, who had been working on a humanitarian mission in eastern Congo, was immediately isolated upon arrival in France and transferred to a specialised medical facility. Officials said the doctor is in stable condition and receiving expert care.

The French Ministry of Health said strict biosafety measures were put in place to prevent any risk of local transmission.

“All precautionary measures, including the patient’s isolation, were taken upon his arrival in the country, with transfer to the hospital under secure conditions to prevent any risk of contamination,” the ministry said in a statement.

Authorities have also begun contact tracing, with anyone identified as a close contact expected to isolate for 21 days while being monitored for symptoms. French officials have stressed that the risk to the general public remains very low.

The case is linked to an ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighbouring Uganda, which has become one of the fastest-growing outbreaks of the disease in recent history.

According to health authorities and the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak has infected more than 1,000 people and caused more than 260 deaths since it was declared a public health emergency in May.

The majority of cases have been reported in the eastern Congolese province of Ituri, an area facing conflict and humanitarian challenges that have complicated response efforts.

The current outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, for which there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment. Health experts have warned that if transmission is not brought under control, the outbreak could become one of the largest on record.

The WHO has, however, urged calm, noting that cases of Ebola detected outside Africa have historically been rare. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said there was no reason for panic and that international health agencies continue to assess the global risk as low.

Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected people or contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include fever, severe weakness, vomiting, and, in some cases, internal and external bleeding.

France’s confirmation of the case has renewed international attention on the outbreak in Central Africa and highlighted concerns over the potential for cross-border spread, even as health officials insist that existing containment measures are effective and the risk to Europe remains limited.
