Technology expert Selasie Vondee has cautioned users against uploading sensitive information to artificial intelligence platforms, warning that once data is entered into a chatbot, it may never be retrieved.
Speaking on the Big Conversation segment on the Culture Daily Morning Show on 3Music TV and Pluzz 89.9 FM, the Chief Technology Officer of Smart Innovations Ghana said many users unknowingly agree to share their information when they accept the terms and conditions of AI applications.
“Most of the time, we don’t read the terms and conditions. We just accept it and then we move on,” he said.
Selasie explained that information entered into AI systems is often used to train and improve the technology.
“Once the data is going in there, you’re not getting it back,” he said.
He warned that publicly available information can easily be collected and analysed to create detailed profiles of individuals.
“I can just take one person, scrape everything on the internet about the person and know exactly what you do, how you think and even be able to come up with other information about how to even talk to you and how to get you to do stuff,” he said.
The technology expert also expressed concern about workers uploading confidential company documents onto AI platforms.
According to him, Ghana currently has limited safeguards governing how citizens and institutions use foreign AI systems.
“For now, we don’t have control over it,” he said.
Selasie urged both individuals and organisations to be cautious about the information they share online and through AI platforms.
“Let’s just be mindful of what we put out there,” he said.
