Nigerian DJ and cultural curator, DJ Venmak, has described his first visit to Ghana as eye-opening and familiar, praising Accra’s energy, people and nightlife during a live studio appearance.
Visiting Ghana for the first time as part of a curated cultural tour, Venmak said his motivation was simple: to experience the city firsthand and connect with its people beyond social media impressions.
“I see December in Ghana everywhere online TikTok, Instagram and Twitter. Everybody’s talking about it, so I decided to come and see for myself,” he said.
On a scale of one to ten, Venmak rated his Accra experience a solid seven to eight, highlighting similarities between Ghana’s capital and Lagos, Nigeria’s entertainment hub.
“Infrastructure-wise, the way the city feels, the energy, Accra has that top-notch African city vibe,” he explained. “It feels very urban and upbeat, just like Lagos.”
While he noted that Lagos moves at a faster, more aggressive pace, Venmak said Accra holds its own in terms of nightlife and cultural experiences. Referencing spots like Republic Bar, he compared the atmosphere to popular Lagos venues such as Down 4 Bistro, emphasising the shared lifestyle culture across both cities.
Beyond infrastructure and nightlife, Venmak praised Ghanaians for their warmth and hospitality.
“Everybody I’ve met has been very welcoming,” he said. “From radio to bars to just chilling in different spaces, the energy has been amazing.”
He also dismissed long-standing claims that Ghanaian music struggles for recognition in Nigeria, pointing out that classic Ghanaian songs have always had a place in Lagos party culture.
“From Keche to old OG Ghanaian jams, those records still bang in Lagos,” he said. “It might just depend on where you’re hanging out.”
Venmak added that cultural exchange between Ghana and Nigeria has always existed, even if it is sometimes exaggerated online through rivalry narratives.
During his stay, Venmak also sampled traditional Ghanaian dishes, including fufu with palm nut soup, describing the experience as intense but enjoyable.
