Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies in London at 82

Born on December 17th, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari joined the Nigerian Army in 1961 and rose to the rank of Major General. He became Nigeria’s military ruler in 1983 after leading a coup that ousted the civilian government of Shehu Shagari. During his military leadership, Buhari was known for his tough stance on corruption, discipline, and public order, though his administration was criticized for suppressing civil liberties and press freedoms.

In 2015, Buhari returned to power as a civilian, becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat an incumbent president.
