Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82 while receiving medical treatment in London. His death was confirmed by the office of President Bola Tinubu, with official statements indicating that Buhari passed away peacefully at 4:30 pm GMT following a prolonged illness.

Born on December 17th, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari joined the Nigerian Army in 1961 and rose to the rank of Major General. He became Nigeria’s military ruler in 1983 after leading a coup that ousted the civilian government of Shehu Shagari. During his military leadership, Buhari was known for his tough stance on corruption, discipline, and public order, though his administration was criticized for suppressing civil liberties and press freedoms.

In 2015, Buhari returned to power as a civilian, becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat an incumbent president. His election, defeating Goodluck Jonathan, was hailed as a significant democratic milestone for Nigeria. He was re-elected in 2019 and served until 2023. During his tenure, Buhari focused on fighting corruption and improving national security, particularly in response to Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast. However, his presidency was also marked by economic challenges, inflation, youth unemployment, and accusations of authoritarianism, especially in his handling of protests and civil dissent.

News of Buhari’s death has prompted a wave of tributes from African and global leaders. President Tinubu has declared a seven-day national mourning period, with flags flown at half-mast nationwide. Buhari will be buried in his hometown of Daura on Tuesday, with Vice President Kashim Shettima overseeing the repatriation of his body.

Muhammadu Buhari’s passing closes a chapter in Nigerian history marked by strong leadership, fierce debate, and a legacy that straddles military discipline and democratic reform. While opinions remain divided, his influence on the country’s political landscape is undeniable.
