Rapper Cardi B is defending herself in court against allegations brought by her former security guard, Emani Ellis, who is seeking $24 million in damages over an alleged assault in 2018.

The case stems from a confrontation outside a Beverly Hills OB-GYN’s office when Cardi B, then four months pregnant, reportedly argued with Ellis. Ellis claims the Grammy-winning artist scratched her face with a fingernail and spat on her.

Taking the stand this week, Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Almánzar, denied ever touching Ellis, admitting only to a heated verbal exchange. “She couldn’t get a scratch from me because I didn’t touch her,” Cardi told the court.

Witnesses appear to support the rapper’s version of events. The clinic’s receptionist testified that she intervened during the argument and ended up with a scratch herself, while Cardi B’s doctor stated he saw no injuries on Ellis and observed no physical aggression from the rapper. Expert testimony, however, has been divided with a plastic surgeon suggesting Ellis’s scars could be consistent with fingernail scratches, while a psychiatrist pointed out inconsistencies in her claims.

Beyond the legal arguments, Cardi B’s courtroom presence has made headlines. On Tuesday, she caused a viral moment by swapping wigs mid-testimony, leaving the attorney briefly confused. Her high-fashion courtroom looks including a $7,000 gray tweed Giambattista Valli ensemble — have also drawn attention.

The trial continues, with Cardi B insisting the dispute was strictly verbal, while Ellis maintains she suffered lasting physical and emotional harm.
