Tyrone Iras Marhguy, a remarkable Ghanaian student and former Achimota School pupil, has once again made headlines, this time for constructing a working computer “brain” entirely from scratch while studying Computer Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States.
Marhguy first came to national attention in Ghana in 2021 when Achimota School initially denied him admission because he wore dreadlocks, which he said were an expression of his Rastafarian faith.
The decision sparked widespread discussion about religious freedom and educational rights, culminating in a High Court ruling that found the school’s actions violated his constitutional rights. He was subsequently admitted, excelled academically and won national and international awards in mathematics and science.
After finishing high school with stellar results, including straight A1s in the WASSCE, Marhguy earned multiple scholarship offers, eventually choosing to study Computer Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania with a full scholarship opportunity valued at around $1.4 million covering his degree program.
Now a student at Penn, Marhguy has undertaken an ambitious independent project: designing and building a fully functional 8-bit Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU), the fundamental “brain” of a computer from individual components without using pre-built chips or modern integrated circuits.
The ALU consists of 3,488 MOSFET transistors, each placed and connected by Marhguy himself.
After more than 250 hours of meticulous design, simulation and verification, the unit was successfully tested with over 1.2 million test vectors, proving it can perform 19 different arithmetic and logical operations.
This achievement demonstrates a deep understanding of computer architecture, digital logic and hardware design. Fields typically tackled with advanced tools and software abstractions in industry.
Unlike modern CPUs that integrate billions of transistors on silicon chips, Marhguy’s project was constructed component-by-component, giving him an intimate, ground-up view of how a central processing unit functions at the most fundamental level.
Marhguy’s achievement highlights the power of curiosity, self-directed learning and determination. It also serves as an inspiring example for students interested in computer architecture, hardware engineering and innovative problem-solving.
