Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority Warns Public Against Sharing Explicit Content Involving Minors

The Cyber Security Authority has issued a strong warning to the public to immediately desist from sharing, forwarding, or possessing sexually explicit images or videos involving minors.

According to the Authority, the creation, distribution or circulation of such content constitutes a serious criminal offence under Ghana’s Cybersecurity Act. Individuals found culpable face prison sentences ranging from five to ten years, depending on the severity of the offence.

In a public advisory, the Cyber Security Authority emphasized that even resharing explicit content of minors, whether out of curiosity, ignorance, or for sensational reasons, is punishable by law. The Authority stressed that intent does not excuse the offence and digital footprints can easily be traced.

The Authority further encouraged the public to take responsibility by reporting any sexually explicit material involving minors to the national cybercrime reporting short code 292. Reports can be made anonymously and timely reporting helps protect victims and bring perpetrators to justice.

The warning forms part of ongoing efforts to safeguard children in the digital space and curb the rising misuse of online platforms for child exploitation. The Cyber Security Authority also called on parents, guardians, educators and content creators to educate young people on safe online practices and remain vigilant.

As Ghana strengthens its cybercrime enforcement framework, authorities have reiterated that protecting minors online is a collective responsibility, and violations will be dealt with decisively.
