Renowned Ghanaian photographer and visual artist Ashmond Oppong has opened up about his creative journey, global experiences, and upcoming exhibition during an engaging appearance on Culture Daily, where he spoke candidly about art, perseverance and redefining African narratives through photography.
Speaking on the show, Ashmond reflected on moments he captured through his lens and the relationships that have shaped his career.
Ashmond’s creative path began not with photography, but fashion. While in secondary school, he started printing T-shirts under his brand Design for Humans of the World, a move that gradually introduced him to visual storytelling.
“I never thought photography would change my life,” he shared. “I actually wanted to be a pastor growing up.”
His transition into photography came organically, influenced by curiosity, collaboration and encouragement from friends who recognised his eye for detail.
Ashmond recounted his early international experiences, particularly his time in London, where he arrived without industry connections. Through persistence and social media networking, he began assisting photographers and eventually landed gigs at major creative spaces, including Sony Music Studios.
His openness to collaboration led to multiple opportunities, including photographing the Emirates Cup and working alongside global creatives.
“The system there was very open,” he explained. “They appreciated seeing Africans create world-class work outside the expected narrative.”
A major turning point in Ashmond’s career came in 2021 when he began working closely with Mr Eazi, documenting album sessions, interviews and global travel. He credited the collaboration for transforming his professional outlook and opening international doors.
“My life changed in 2021,” he said. “I manifested a lot of what I’m living now.”
Ashmond spoke passionately about photography as a tool for reshaping global misconceptions about Africa. He recalled encounters abroad where people expressed outdated stereotypes about the continent, moments he says motivate him to tell more authentic African stories through his work.
The visual artist also announced his upcoming solo exhibition, scheduled for December 28–30, near the American House in Accra. The exhibition will feature an immersive blend of photography and video, allowing viewers to experience deeper narratives behind each image.
The project he says is deeply personal, serving as a tribute to his late parents, who passed away when he was seven and his late friend.
