Reports of a 20% hike in public transportation fares scheduled to go into effect on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, have been rejected by road transport operators, who characterize the announcement as unapproved and unapproved by the relevant authorities.
The joint statement by the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), emphasized that the reported increase did not adhere to the established protocols for reviewing transport fares, which call for discussions between government authorities and transport operators.
As a result, the two transportation organizations insisted that the current approved fares continue to be in effect and asked commuters and the general public to ignore the reports.
“We therefore wish to condemn this decision in no uncertain terms and request the general public to disregard the publication by the supposed group with the contempt it deserves.” the statement said.
Passengers were reassured by the operators that any future fare adjustments would be announced via the proper channels following discussions with the relevant authorities.
They also reiterated their dedication to guaranteeing fair fare determination while protecting the welfare of commuters and transportation companies.
