Hiplife Is Not Dead, Let’s Find a Name for Our Music - Appietus

Veteran Ghanaian producer Appietus is once again stirring conversation in the music space, calling for a deeper reflection on the identity of Ghanaian sound while reaffirming the resilience of hiplife.

In a recent interview, the hitmaker pushed back against claims that the genre has faded, stating boldly that “Hiplife is not dead; let’s find a name for our music.” His comment highlights a growing conversation among creatives about how Ghana’s evolving sound is defined and represented globally.

Hiplife, a fusion of highlife and hip-hop, has long been a cornerstone of Ghana’s music industry. For Appietus, the issue isn’t the death of the genre but rather its transformation. As new sounds emerge and artistes experiment across Afrobeats, drill and highlife influences, he believes Ghanaian music is entering a phase where it may need rebranding rather than revival.

Beyond industry commentary, Appietus also shared a personal story that resonated with many one rooted in doubt, persistence, and eventual validation.

“My mom doubted my dream until Daddy Lumba showed up at my studio,” he revealed.

The moment marked a turning point in his journey, symbolizing both recognition and reassurance. Daddy Lumba, a legendary figure in Ghanaian music, visiting his studio was not just a co-sign it was proof that his passion had substance.

Appietus’ reflections come at a time when Ghana’s music scene continues to expand its global footprint, with debates around genre, authenticity and identity becoming more relevant than ever.

While opinions may differ on what that name should be, one thing is clear, according to Appietus, the sound is alive, evolving and far from forgotten.
