Ghanaian singer and creative entrepreneur Maddy Maznaz made a vibrant return to television, joining the Morning Bite team for a spirited conversation about life abroad, her evolving music journey and an unexpected collaboration with American rap legend Snoop Dogg.
Appearing on air for the first time in a long while, Maddy admitted she was “nervous” but grateful to be back home, describing the interview as a fresh start after a “traumatic” previous media encounter.
Maddy revealed that she and her family recently relocated to Monrovia, Liberia, due to her husband’s diplomatic work. The transition, she admitted, was a culture shock: “I couldn’t believe it… the food isn’t that good. There’s even no okra. I was so shocked.”
Shortly after settling there, she received an unexpected email, a feature request from Snoop Dogg. “I thought it was a plot to kill me. I said, ‘No way… this is Snoop Dogg. What am I going to sing?’”
She flew to the United States to record the feature, which has since been pulled down for restructuring as it will now appear on her upcoming album. Maddy now spends most of her time in France, returning to Ghana occasionally to work on music projects.
Her newest single, WERK, was inspired by her intense fitness routine.“It’s a low-key analogy of life. Whatever you want, you have to work towards it.”
Maddy refuses to be boxed into one genre, describing her sound as fluid: Hip-hop, afrobeat, gospel and trap. She says Ghanaians have embraced her versatility: “Ghana has accepted me as an artiste. I can release any genre I want.”
Despite living in multiple countries, Maddy says travel doesn’t heavily influence her sound.“It doesn’t touch the music, but it definitely touches the clothing.” Travel, she explained, inspires her visuals more than her melodies.
With a new album on the way, a Snoop Dogg feature in the pipeline and fresh creative energy from her time abroad, Maddy says she’s ready to take her music to the next level.
