TikTok Halts Night-Time Livestreams in Nigeria Amid Surge in Unsafe Content

TikTok has suspended night-time livestreaming in Nigeria, a move the platform says is aimed at strengthening safety and preventing the spread of inappropriate content. The restriction, which runs from 11:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. daily, follows a rise in reports of adult-oriented and unsafe livestream activities originating from the country.

In a statement, TikTok explained that the pause will allow its safety and moderation teams to review existing policies, improve enforcement mechanisms and ensure that livestreams remain safe for users of all ages. The company noted that while LIVE is an important feature for creators and communities, it must operate within guidelines that protect viewers, especially minors.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions among Nigerian creators. Some see it as a necessary step to maintain the platform’s integrity, while others worry about the impact on their engagement, as nighttime often attracts higher viewer numbers.

TikTok assured users that the restriction is temporary, emphasizing that the goal is to create a safer online environment. Once the review is complete, the company is expected to announce updated safety measures and clarify when night-time LIVE access will be restored.

For now, Nigerian users will have to adjust to the new schedule as TikTok works on tightening its content controls and promoting responsible digital behaviour.
