Ghanaian-American DJ and producer, DJ Roger Beat, is carving a dynamic path in global music, transitioning from hip-hop production in the United States to commanding Afro House stages across the world.
Speaking with Lerny Lomotey on Unpackin, the Chicago-born, Washington D.C. raised creative shared that his journey into music began at just six years old, inspired by children’s television and a desire to be on screen. Despite limited support early on, he remained committed, evolving from a young rapper into a go-go band performer, a genre native to Washington D.C. before stepping into music production.
“I just stayed consistent, kept grinding, and made sure I was always elevating myself,” he said.
His early career saw him working behind the scenes with major names in hip-hop, including Gucci Mane, Young Thug, Waka Flocka Flame, Yo Gotti and French Montana. He explained that many of these connections came through persistence showing up at venues, waiting backstage and pitching his beats directly to artistes.
“Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn’t. But I never let rejection stop me,” he noted.
Interestingly, DJ Roger only transitioned into DJing about six to seven months ago. A move that has already taken him across cities and continents, including Boston, Thailand, Saudi Arabia and now Ghana. Unlike production, he describes DJing as a more immediate and immersive experience.
“As a DJ, you control the room. My goal is to make people dance and remember me by the end of the night,” he said.
Now focused on Afro House, a subgenre within electronic dance music (EDM), DJ Roger credits global exposure and touring with DJ Snake for influencing his sound.
“I was introduced to different genres on the road, and Afro House just felt right. The rhythm, the drums, the energy. It connects to Africa,” he explained.
He also acknowledges that his Ghanaian roots play a significant role in shaping his musical direction, particularly his affinity for drum-heavy, rhythmic sounds that reflect African heritage.
Currently in Ghana for his headline event, “One Frequency Ghana,” DJ Roger aims to deliver an immersive Afro House experience at Polo Beach Club on April 6. The event will feature performances from international DJs alongside local talents, bringing together diverse audiences under one shared musical energy.
“The idea is simple, one frequency. Music is about feeling, not language. Even if you don’t understand the words, you feel the vibe,” he said.
Beyond the event, DJ Roger expressed interest in collaborating with Ghanaian artistes, naming Sarkodie, Stonebwoy and Black Sherif as talents he admires, while hinting at a possible future project with Medikal.
As Afro House continues to gain global traction, DJ Roger stands at the intersection of cultures, blending his American industry experience with African musical roots and positioning himself as a rising force in the evolving global dance music scene.
