Founder of BlacVolta, Joseph Adjei, has issued a public apology after a series of old tweets linked to his account resurfaced online, triggering outrage across social media.
In a statement posted on Thursday, May 14, Joseph Adjei admitted that several tweets from 2010 and 2011 contained language that was “offensive, insensitive, and wrong,” particularly comments that appeared to joke about rape and sexual violence.
The outrage started after screenshots of the old posts began circulating online. The tweets included comments many social media users described as disturbing and inappropriate, with some appearing to trivialise rape and sexual assault.
He explained that the account involved was originally his personal account before it was later transitioned into the official BlacVolta account.
“I’ve seen the old tweets and screenshots from 2010-2011 that have resurfaced online. The account involved was originally a personal account before the transition and migration from the @blacvolta1 account to the current official @blacvoltaX account,” the statement said.
He also claimed that while some screenshots had been shared without context and others were allegedly not authentic, he acknowledged that there were still posts from that period that were unacceptable.
“The language and casual jokes normalizing and trivializing serious sexual violence were extreme, unacceptable, and wrong,” the statement added.
Joseph Adjei apologised to women and survivors who may have been affected by the comments, saying he understood the disappointment and anger generated by the resurfaced posts.
“Over the years, I’ve grown personally and professionally, but I understand growth does not cancel impact,” he wrote.
As part of what he described as efforts toward accountability, he said he would engage organisations in Ghana focused on gender-based violence, women’s empowerment and digital safety awareness.
He further indicated that measures would be introduced internally to ensure the culture around BlacVolta reflects “respect, responsibility, and care for people.”
The apology, however, has received mixed reactions online, with some users questioning whether the statement went far enough and others calling for stronger accountability measures beyond public apologies.
