Ghanaian
sprinter Joseph Paul Amoah says the national team is now targeting a medal in
the relay events after Ghana failed to secure a podium finish in the men’s 100
metres final at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships (ASAC) at
the University of Ghana Stadium.
Joseph
Paul Amoah finished fourth in the final while Abdul-Rasheed Saminu placed
sixth, despite both athletes impressing in the semifinals earlier in the
competition.
The
two sprinters had advanced to the final after strong performances in their
respective heats, with Saminu winning Heat 2 of the semifinals while Amoah also
booked qualification from Heat 3.
Speaking
after the race in an interview zone at the University of Ghana Stadium, Amoah
admitted disappointment with the outcome of the individual event but expressed
optimism about Ghana’s chances in the relay races.
“We’re
going to run the relay,” he said, adding that the team would recover and
prepare adequately for the event.
Amoah
had earlier expressed confidence about reaching the podium before the final but
was unable to translate that ambition into a medal-winning performance.
The
result marked a setback for Ghana’s sprint team, especially with expectations
high for the host nation at the continental championship. Ghana’s relay team,
however, remains one of the country’s strongest medal prospects heading into
the remaining days of competition.
The
African Senior Athletics Championships continue at the University of Ghana
Stadium with several track and field events scheduled in the coming days.
