Preparation, Not A Lynx Curse, Determines Artistes’ Survival After Exit - Kuami Eugene

Afrobeat singer and songwriter Kuami Eugene has dismissed claims of a so-called Lynx curse, insisting that artistes who leave Lynx Entertainment struggle mainly because they fail to prepare adequately before exiting the label.

Speaking on Culture Daily on 3Music TV, the Monica hitmaker reflected on his departure from the label and described it as an emotional but necessary transition.

According to him, Richie Mensah had long believed he would succeed outside the label because of his work ethic and catalogue.

“I remember that evening when we all sat down and Richie said, ‘Kwame has been with us for quite some time now… he’s one artiste I know if he leaves Lynx, he’s going to survive because who says no to Kwame’s music?’” he recounted.

Kuami Eugene said he never believed in the Lynx curse narrative often discussed in Ghana’s music industry.

“I’m very much aware there’s nothing like that because Richie is a very good human being,” he said.

The singer explained that many artistes underestimate the amount of structure and industry relationships that labels provide.

“People don’t put one or two together before they leave Lynx Entertainment because they do almost all the job for you,” he stated.

“They know everybody in the industry, so you have to build that acquaintance and connection with everybody before you leave.”

He added that artistes who leave expecting to simply keep all performance revenue without maintaining relationships often struggle.

“The conversation is not normally centered on just how much you can give me. It is how long we’ve been together and how good we are to each other,” he said.

Kuami Eugene credited Lynx Entertainment for helping him maintain strong industry ties even after his exit.

“It should be like Lynx handed me to them,” he noted while praising the continued support he receives from media houses and stakeholders.

The artiste also revealed that he deliberately prepared for life after the label by consistently releasing hit songs independently before officially rolling out a major project.

He disclosed that songs such as Belinda, and Do Better were released after leaving the label.

“I was still making bangers when I had already exited Lynx Entertainment,” he said.

During the interview, Kuami Eugene also praised Lynx Entertainment’s internal systems, saying the label played a major role in strategically releasing music and managing his career output.

“I really appreciate Lynx Entertainment because they had a way to put all these songs out there and structure them,” he said.

The musician recently released his new EP, Sweet Boy.
