At the 6th edition of the 3Media Women’s Brunch, fashion entrepreneur, Selina Beb, shared an inspiring story of self-discovery, resilience and the courage to pursue one’s true calling no matter the odds.
Standing before a room filled with accomplished women, Selina Beb began with gratitude, expressing how honoured she felt to be among “fabulous women.”But beyond the celebration, her story revealed a journey marked by bold decisions, setbacks and unwavering determination.
Selina’s path wasn’t always clear-cut. As a young girl, she dreamed of becoming a medical doctor alongside her best friend. However, that dream shifted in senior high school when she realised science wasn’t her strength. She then set her sights on journalism, inspired by media icon Oprah Winfrey, with aspirations of one day hosting her own talk show. But life had other plans.
Under the guidance and insistence of her father, Selina pursued a degree in law in the UK. Despite completing her degree, she admitted that her heart was never in it.
“When your heart is not in it, you will struggle,” she shared, acknowledging the difficulty of studying law without passion.
Choosing fulfilment over expectation, she pivoted once again, this time to communications, eventually building a career in media. After returning to Ghana in 2008, she worked with platforms such as GBC and Radio XYZ. Yet, even then, something was missing.
That “something” was fashion.
Driven by her love for style and creativity, Selina began exploring the fashion space, particularly at a time when African print was gaining global attention. With limited financial support and little encouragement from family due to disappointment over her departure from law, she started small, selling handmade African print bags from her car booth while still working in radio to fund her business. It was not easy.
Operating with minimal resources and navigating an industry without a safety net, she relied heavily on social media to promote her work. Slowly but surely, her consistency began to pay off. Within a year, her efforts started gaining recognition and her family began to see her vision.
That support helped her open her first shop in Osu, marking a turning point in her journey.
From there, the brand evolved. What started with bags expanded into jewellery, footwear and eventually clothing, transforming Selina Beb Designs into a full-fledged fashion brand.
Today, her work has reached global heights.
Selina Beb proudly shared that her designs have been featured on major international platforms including BBC, CNN and VOA. Her clientele includes high-profile figures such as Ghana’s First Ladies, past and present, as well as notable international personalities. Her work has also graced runways in the United States, Italy and the United Kingdom.
Reflecting on her journey, she credited her success to staying true to her chosen path even when others doubted her.
“I had friends who said I would get bored,” she said. “But I persevered.”
Her story stands as a testament to the power of resilience, self-belief and the willingness to start small in pursuit of something greater.
As she accepted her recognition at the Women’s Brunch, Selina Beb expressed deep gratitude to 3Media Networks for the honour, describing the moment as both humbling and affirming.
Her journey from aspiring doctor to lawyer, to media professional and ultimately to a globally recognised fashion entrepreneur, serves as a powerful reminder that success is not always linear. Sometimes, it is found in the courage to change direction and the strength to keep going.
