Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Maame Tiwaa
Legendary Ghanaian gospel musician Maame Tiwaa, renowned for her work with the Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo band, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025. Her death marks a significant loss for Ghana’s gospel music community.

For over four decades, Maame Tiwaa’s soulful voice helped shape the sound of Ghanaian gospel music. She lent her vocal talent to numerous beloved songs, including WO HAW NE SEN, WAYE AWIE, YEN NKA NKYERE YEN AGYA and many others. Her music resonated across churches and homes, inspiring generations of worshippers.

Her last major public appearance was in May 2025, when she received a Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), delivering a heartfelt performance that reaffirmed her lasting impact in gospel music.

Tributes have since poured in from fans, fellow musicians and churches across Ghana, remembering her as a humble, dedicated and inspiring figure whose ministry through music touched countless lives.

Though the cause of her death has not been disclosed, reports indicate it followed a brief illness. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

Maame Tiwaa’s legacy and her contribution to Asomafo extend beyond her voice, she helped define the gospel music landscape in Ghana, leaving behind a body of work that will continue to inspire and move worshippers for generations.
