Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has shared that President John Dramani Mahama inherited an economy in deep crisis when he assumed office for the second term in January 2025.

He attributed the crisis to many of years poor policy decisions, excessive borrowing and poor accountability.

He said this while delivering the Mid-Year Budget Review on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, July 23, 2026, saying the 2022 economic crisis was not a unique incident, but rather the outcome of several governmental errors.

The Minister pointed out that the current Mahama led administration has prioritized restoring stability through responsible fiscal management and disciplined economice reforms due to the severe economic challenges inherited.

“Mr Speaker, when this administration took office in January 2025, President Mahama inherited an economy on its knees. Mr Speaker, the economic crisis of 2022 was not merely an accident but a consequence of a series of wrong policy choices. Choices about reckless spending, choices of excessive borrowing and choices of weak accountability,” Dr Forson told Parliament.

According to the finance minister, the administration is still dedicated to rebuilding the economy by implementing fiscal discipline, maintaining macroeconomic stability, and adopting measures meant to boost investor confidence and produce sustainable growth.
