Manchester United notes that they will now conduct their own process before determining the future of Mason Greenwood. The club released a statement after the decision of the Crown Prosecution Service that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.
Mason Greenwood's potential return to Premier League club Manchester United has not yet been confirmed by the English club as all attempted rape, assault, and coercive control charges against the 21-year-old have been withdrawn.
The footballer was detained in late January 2022 after pictures and videos were shared on social media, and he was also questioned about possible murderous threats. Greenwood was subsequently banned from competing in games or practices by the Premier League club. Greenwood has a contract with United through 2025. On January 22, 2022, he made his last of 129 appearances for the team in a 1-0 victory over West Ham.
Bail was extended for Greenwood until the middle of June 2022; it was initially scheduled to expire in April. Later, he was charged, and a preliminary trial date of November 2023 was set.
Earlier today, the Crown Prosecution Service decided not to press charges against him. Head of Public Protection for Greater Manchester Police Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr stated that given the significant media attention the case has received, it is only fair that they share the news that the 21-year-old footballer, who had been detained and charged in connection with an inquiry launched in January 2022, no longer faces criminal proceedings in relation to this.
She further said, "The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly. Despite the media and public’s interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail''.
Following the charges, United suspended Greenwood, and he was also withdrawn from FIFA 22, and Nike cancelled his sponsorship arrangement. is current situation, now that the charges have been withdrawn, is unknown. The club was obliged to deny Greenwood's return in April 2022 due to his profile being public on their website. Greenwood came up through the Manchester United youth academy and has 35 goals in 129 games since making his debut in 2019.
