In a striking and controversial turn, rapper Nicki Minaj has lent her voice to former US President Donald Trump’s sweeping allegations of a mass slaughter of Christians in Nigeria delivering a forceful speech at a United Nations event in New York that has reignited debate over religion, politics and international intervention.
The chain of events began when Nicki Minaj re-posted a Truth Social message from Trump, in which he accused radical Islamist groups of perpetrating vast and systematic killings of Christians in Nigeria. He declared that Christianity in the country faces an “existential threat,” and has even ordered the Pentagon to prepare for possible military action.
Her endorsement of Trump’s narrative prompted a personal invitation from Mike Waltz, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Waltz praised Nicki Minaj’s influence, saying she could use her platform to spotlight what he described as atrocities against Christians in Nigeria.
Nicki Minaj addressed a panel titled Combatting Religious Violence and the Killing of Christians in Nigeria at the US Mission to the UN. In her remarks, she thanked Trump for prioritising the issue.
Nicki Minaj then issued a rallying cry, warning that faith is under attack. She recounted how throughout her travels, she has seen how deeply music and worship are intertwined in people’s lives, and said that religious freedom means all of us should be able “to sing our faith … regardless of who we are, where we live and what we believe.”
To her credit, Nicki Minaj maintained in her speech that her concern is not partisan. “This is not about taking sides,” she said. “It’s about what I’ve always stood for … standing up in the face of injustice.”
Still, the episode presents a diplomatic tightrope. By bringing a celebrity voice into such a contested debate, both the US and the UN risk oversimplifying Nigeria’s multifaceted crisis and stoking further division in a country where the consequences of misrepresentation could be fatal.
