Nollywood actors, filmmakers and fans gathered in south-eastern Nigeria on Thursday to bid a final farewell to actor Alexx Ekubo, who was laid to rest in his hometown of Arochukwu in Abia State.
The burial marked the end of several days of funeral rites for the actor, whose death last month at the age of 40 sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s film industry.
Ekubo died after battling kidney cancer, according to family statements and multiple media reports.
Family members, friends, colleagues and admirers travelled from across Nigeria to attend the funeral service and interment.
The ceremony followed a service of songs held in Lagos on June 10 and a wake in Arochukwu on June 17.
Images and videos shared online showed a large turnout of mourners dressed predominantly in white as they paid their respects to the late actor.
Several leading figures from Nollywood were present, reflecting the impact Ekubo had on the industry during a career that spanned more than a decade.
Tributes continued to pour in from colleagues who described him as a talented performer, a loyal friend and a positive influence within the entertainment industry.
The actor’s death prompted widespread mourning among fellow actors and fans, many of whom took to social media to celebrate his life and career.
Ekubo rose to prominence after emerging as first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition before establishing himself as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces.
He went on to appear in numerous films and television productions, earning a reputation for his roles in romantic dramas and comedies.
His family announced funeral arrangements in May, thanking supporters for the messages, prayers and visits received following his death.
